Joined 'Tidereach' in Singapore as JEO after completing apprenticeship in Chatham Dockyard, turbine bearings had been wiped and repair carried out by ship engineers. On exercise in S China Sea 4EO fell asleep after disconnecting boiler low water alarm with burnt out fire row tubes the result; retubed the boiler at sea. Admitted to BMH after good, farewell cocktail party and missed the sailing, had to get a lift on 'Centaur' and rejoined 'Tidereach' in Indian Ocean by jackstay transfer. Rejoined after Wallsend refit and sailed again for Singapore with role as fleet tanker for 'Ark Royal'. Joined 'Tidesurge' as 4EO in Hong Kong who accompanied 'Eagle' and spent some long time on Beira patrol. Unfortunately had to leave the service due to marriage. Now retired after eventful career in medical/electrical products manufacturing and setting up the same in Soviet Union/Russia/Eastern Europe. |
